Wrote “mass quotes” email marketing module. Built the project website with HTML/CSS and later using Sharepoint. Conducted beta tests and brought the core system to market after 3 years of development. Work continues with add-ons and optional features. Size of the code base is about 3 million lines of VB.NET and SQL.

Experience cont’d:

Alcatel Internetworking (formerly Packet Engines) — Spokane, WA

Director, Software Engineering                                                                                            2000 to 2001

·         Joined a Spokane start-up company that had become quite successful, with multiple hardware/software products released to market and installed in the Internet backbone. Came on board shortly after they were acquired by the French telecomm giant Alcatel.

·         Worked to overcome a number of challenges, notably mass exodus of the original talent because of disillusionment with “corporate” management. This was combined with an aggressive development schedule for a future generation of product at the very leading edge of Internet technology. Recruited and hired staff, rebuilt communication and teamwork. Delivered 4 complex product releases on time over a period of 2 years, preserving a $75M/yr revenue stream.

·         Established working relationships and cooperative development with corporate development groups in Silicon Valley and in Antwerp. Managed multiple outsourced projects with Wipro in Bangalore.

·         Co-inventor, “Dynamic Policy Based Routing”, US patent pending: Application Number: 10/023,542. This is a hardware+software design applicable to telecom backbone carrier networks. It enables configurable intermediate virtual partitioning of the network based on service request.

·         Traveled extensively to corporate locations world-wide. Communicated the strategy and the detailed technical information throughout the company.

·         Proposed and led the project of moving the company’s primary Pinnacle Plus product from proprietary hardware and specialized Unix to Intel PCs and Windows NT. Delivered this project on time in 6 months, after initially estimating one year to do it, saving over a quarter-million dollars.

·         Built relationships and agreements across departments and international divisions to make most effective use of staff in strategic development projects. Saved an estimated $2M/yr in staffing costs by organizing joint development projects with teams in Shelton, CT and Ivrea and Bologna, Italy.

Development Engineer; International Software Consultant                                                   1984 to 1994

·         Embedded systems application programming in Z-80 assembly language and in C on Unix.

·         Led on-site software development projects for international distributors and customers.

·         Designed and implemented a controller-based foreign currency exchange system deployed by Midland Bank at London’s Gatwick airport.
